Texas Big Bend Bluebonnets - The morning sunrise had yet to brake over the horizon of the Chisos mountains near the landmark Cerro Castellan with the Texas big bend bluebonnets flowing down below to the desert canyon valley below in this landscape. The sunrise colors were just beginning to show on this cold Feburary monring in Big Bend with wonderful colors of pre-dawn sky. While we waited for the sunrise show we heard a pack of coyotes howling and yeping just beneath us which actually gave us some trepidaton as they were a little too close for comfort but this is a wild area. Luckily for us they were not interested in checking us out. Big Bend National Park was in full bloom with the desert bluebonnets this year and it was lovely. This was the best year we have seen in our 10 plus years of coming here. The Big Bend bluebonnet or Chisos bluebonnet are the common name of this lupine. It is native to Texas and Chihuahua, where it can be found blooming from January through June. What surprised us were they were all over the hill sides and along the roads in thick patches. We were curious how they got so high up on the mountain sides. In any case it was a wonderful site to see and made us glad we came for this unique show.
